Thermal Effects

Surface technology solutions are used to both insulate components against the effects of high temperatures and promote the conduction of heat uniformly. Other coatings are used because of their capability to withstand the effects of high temperature thermal adsorption. The large number of coatings systems available for thermal applications allow precision tailoring of the system to meet a variety of requirements, including proper matching of thermal expansion coefficients to the substrate material. The application of high heat to a component may also require protection from high temperature corrosion effects, in addition to the thermal properties of the coating system.

Thin film coatings, such as AlTiN, increase surface hardness and the oxidation resistance of cutting tools, thereby increasing tool life and machining speed, while reducing the lubrication and cooling fluid needed.
