Friction and Wear

Wear is the undesired removal of material from a component as a result of wear mechanisms (tribo-systems) such as adhesion, tribo-oxidation, abrasion and erosion. In conjunction with a corrosive environment, tribo-corrosion will occur. This synergistic effect can cause very rapid loss of material and component failure.

In applications where components slide on each other, friction arises that can result in seizure or wear due to galling and overheating. Coatings can effectively reduce the friction coefficient, adhesion and tribo-oxidation, as well as improve lubrication.

To combat friction and wear, an analysis of the type of wear mechanism and an understanding of the tribological factors is crucial to the development of a successful solution. As a result of our long experience, Sulzer Metco has developed a substantial portfolio of processes and materials to manage friction and wear applications for a wide variety of industries.
